Many therapists have shifted their practice to virtual services.   Online therapy has become a popular way for clients to access therapy.  It can provide more flexibility for you where you can participate in therapy services from the comfort of your own home, car, or other private spot.

Online therapy is just like in person therapy, except that it happens virtually.

If you’re new to the online therapy world, these tips may help you walk through your first online session.

What is online therapy?

Online therapy is a modern way for licensed social workers, psychologists, and counsellors to connect with their clients through a digital platform.

Online therapy is flexible, accessible, and it can bring comfort to you as the client as you can have your session in the privacy of your own home.

Its flexible in that you don’t have to travel to see your therapist.

Its accessible as you can book therapy sessions with a therapist outside of your community.

Its comfortable as you can access your sessions from the comfort of your own home or other private spot.

How to prepare for your first session

Before your first online session, make sure you’re in a comfortable and private location with access to stable internet.  You want to ensure you are in a space in which you can talk openly and will not have distractions or interruptions.

Many online therapy platforms allow you to test your microphone and camera before the session.  It’s always best that you do so you can trouble shoot if you are having any difficulty.

Think about your goals prior to your session.  What brought you to therapy?  What are you seeking support for?

Have a drink or a snack handy.  Eating and drinking during sessions is always welcome!

Dress comfortably.  You can wear your pajamas if that’s what makes you comfortable.

What to expect in your first session

In your first session, your therapist will introduce themselves and explain how sessions will proceed.  The initial session is about building relationships, building trust, and building comfort.

Feel free to ask any questions you have to help you determine if the therapist is a good fit for you.

Confidentiality is explained as well as any policies or contracts pertaining to your involvement in therapy.

Your therapist will gather information on your background, mental health, living situation, and your history to gain comprehensive knowledge about your needs.

Everyone’s experiences in therapy is different.  Therapy is about solving problems and working towards healthier thoughts, emptions, and relationships.

Different therapists use different strategies and techniques during their sessions.  No one process or method works for everyone.

After your first session

Consistency is key in the therapeutic journey.  In my practice I always book further sessions with my clients, so they have consistent scheduled sessions.  A therapist may suggest weekly or bi weekly sessions to start, depending on your needs.

Many times, there is work after therapy.  Your therapist may ask that you complete some homework or exercises to complete in-between sessions.

Make sure you are talking with your therapist about what’s working and what is not during your sessions.

What you’ll get out of virtual therapy

There are many benefits to therapy including:

  • Stronger communication skills
  • Improved self-awareness
  • Improved or valuable coping strategies
  • Improvement on the issues that were negatively impacting your life
